Work / Art Medium / Interest
Encaustic-Hot Wax
Profile / Bio
I am an Encaustic artist and live in Birch Bay, Washington. Encaustic is painting with hot melted wax that is fused into a surface by heat. Encaustic art is an ancient Greek painting technique.
The hot, molten wax is applied to a porous surface, usually wood. Each layer of wax is fused into the previous layer with a heat gun or torch. The wax medium is beeswax, but it must have dammar resin in it so it can harden as it cools. The wax can either be clear or pigmented.
I have been working with this medium for 8+ years. My work has been on display at Bellingham Allied Arts, Lynden's Jansen Art Center and Blaine Library.
The possibilities with encaustic are endless; mixed media, collage, structural, monotype to name a few.
