Profile / Bio
I am Lisa Nakama, and I am a fiber artist living in Blaine, WA. I took my first wet felting class at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle nearly 20 years ago. I was thrilled with the outcome- I am somebody who has never been great at drawing or even coloring inside the lines. But working with fiber allows for happy accidents.
About eight years ago, I began really focusing on growing my skills in wet felting. I have taken many classes online and in person with many amazing artist/teachers. What I found is that I love the problem solving involved in creating installations, wall hangings and wearables. My work was shown for the first time at a juried show at The Jansen Art Center in Lynden. Since then, I have been in online exhibits in Fiber Art Now and Felt Matters magazines. I have continued to show at The J and often have work in their gallery shop.
I call my art making Shift Fiber Art because I see life as constant transformation, one shift at a time. A shift can be in response to a life event, or it can be self-motivated. A shift is a change in perspective, as slight mental nudge that allows the heart to open. Work with fiber is the same. Wool, water, silk and other matter come together, transforming and shifting into tactile and visual perspectives.
