I work in mixed media (acrylics, inks, charcoal, mark-making tools, etc.) on both paper and canvas. During the pandemic I started a new chapter in creating expressive abstract paintings, returning to a passion begun during my studies of creative process in the 1970s. Life changes led me to a career as a psychologist over the past 35 years. I am now shifting the balance, dedicating more time to my own work. Every painting is an experiment. I meet the blank sheet or canvas without preconceptions, opening to the possibilities of the moment. Each mark invites the next in a spontaneous dance. I don’t “see” or visualize what is to come. I paint, then “see.” My paintings are my experiencing, my opening to the moment and what I am a part of. I often cut or tear works, reconstructing into collages. This is a new creative challenge that calls for moving between spontaneity and greater discernment. My inspiration draws from viewing the work of other artists, past and present, from my studies in psychology, spirituality, Asian philosophies and art, from the lineage of abstract expressionists, from finding beauty in the simple acts of everyday living.
